Advancing quality in nursing

Quality healthcare is the fundamental basis for nursing and is enshrined in the heart of the profession. The provision and receipt of such a service in the country is not only a privilege but is enshrined in the country’s constitution. Quality service is ‘not an act but a habit’. Health Advance Institute is proud to host the 11th Annual Nursing Unit Management conference under this theme, which will examine critical concepts, strategies and techniques related to the provision of quality nursing care and services.

Speakers

Prof Neltjie Christina van Wyk:
She is a nationally and internationally recognised Professor who is currently an Associate Professor in the Department Nursing Science. She holds the following qualifications: BSocSc Bachelor of Social Science, BSocSc (Hons) Nursing Science, MSocSc Community Nursing Science, Post-basic diploma Oncology Nursing Science and a PhD in Nursing Science. She has vast experience in the clinical, education fields in nursing as well as in nursing research not to mention the numerous publications and presentations in the life of her career to date.

Dr Mmapheko Doriccah Peu:
Dr Mmapheko Doriccah Peu is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Nursing Science for the University of Pretoria. She holds a PhD in Community Nursing and is heavily involved in the supervision of PhD and master’s students especially on their thesis. She has in many ways full participation of local and international communities as well as in several committees inside and outside her job.

Sr. Astrid Engelbrecht:
Sister Astrid Engelbrecht is currently a Surgical Ward Unit Manager, a Clinical Governance – Risk, Quality and Incident Manager as well as HAQS – Accreditation Coordinator at Netcare Pretoria East Hospital. She is extensively experienced in Unit Management, Risk Management, Incident Management, Quality Improvement, and Clinical Facilitation among many others. She has scooped many awards and had several presentations, from her school days and more on her working days owing to her diligence and passion about health care.

Sr. Johanna E. Martins:
Johanna E. Martins is currently a Nurse Educator who is vastly experienced in Operating Theater nursing science, anesthetic and recovery nursing as well nursing education. She has to date articles and numerous presentations both locally and internationally.

Sr. Joyce Selesho:
Sr. Selesho is a Clinical Tutor at Louis Pasteur Private Hospital. She holds the following qualifications: Bcur. Nursing Administration, Community Health Nursing, Occupational Health Nursing and diplomas in Nursing Education, General Nursing, Midwifery & Operating Theatre Nursing Science. She has extensive experience in staff development and training and is an Inspirational Motivational Speaker who has presented at a number of Conferences.

Mr. Modise J. Ramantsi:
Mr. Modise J. Ramantsi holds a Diploma in Nursing Management and Diploma in operating room science among other qualifications. He is well experienced in Patient Care Delivery, Emergency Care, People Management, Growth and Development of Staff, Quality Control as well as Health and safety management.

Sr. Moselene A. R. du-Plessis:
Moselene A. R. du-Plessis is highly experienced in nursing management and nursing education and currently a Lecturer at the University of Pretoria. She holds the following qualifications; Bcur I et A (Nursing Education, Nursing Administration, and Community Health Nursing Science) and Mcur Advanced Nursing Administration.

Sr. Sharon Reinecke:
Sharon Reinecke holds a Diploma in Nursing Administration (Cum laude and Gold Medal) and a Diploma in Midwifery. She is highly experienced in Unit Management, Infection Prevention and Control, Budget Development, Costing Models Development and the Monitoring of Stock use in a hospital environment. She is currently a Regional Nursing Manager at Life Healthcare for the KZN region and also the legal professional portfolio of the nursing function.

Sr. Varshika M. Bhana:
Varshika M. Bhana lectures at the University of Pretoria in the Department of Nursing Science. She holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Advanced medical and surgical nursing (Cum Laude). She has had several publications and presentations throughout her career and is highly experienced in the clinical field and in nursing education.

“The minute to win it scenario”
This is a fun filled educational activity, where delegates will be placed in competitive groups and tackle challenges on financial management. The opposing groups will be given a scenario and then answer a set of questions such as: What are the costs that can be reduced in a nursing unit and how? At what point can the nursing unit be closed? How do you know whether the nursing unit is viable or not? What can you do to make the nursing unit a profit center?
